Lenovo Yoga 7i No Power Issue Resolved – USB-C Chip Saves the Day!

Another day, another laptop rescue! Today on the workbench is a sleek Lenovo Yoga 7i that came in with the dreaded “no power” issue. The customer brought it to me after another repair shop had already thrown in the towel, declaring the motherboard dead and recommending a full replacement. Ouch—for both the wallet and the nerves.

But around here, we like to dig a little deeper before writing off a perfectly good machine.

Time to roll up the sleeves and get to work. First step: diagnostics. Plugging in the charger, I immediately noticed the voltage was stuck at 5 volts—a common symptom that points to power negotiation issues, especially on modern USB-C powered laptops. That’s a clue worth chasing.

With schematics in one hand and multimeter in the other, I traced the fault down to—you guessed it—a shorted USB-C controller IC chip. This little chip is responsible for handling the power delivery handshake between the charger and the laptop, so when it fails, the entire system can be starved of proper voltage.

The chip in question isn’t one you find just lying around in UK shops, so I sourced a genuine replacement from China. Fortunately, it arrived in just five days (kudos to international logistics!). Today, I installed the new chip, reassembled the board, crossed my fingers… and voilà! The Lenovo sprang back to life like it had just woken from a deep nap.

Result? One fully working Lenovo Yoga 7i, a very happy customer, and no need for an expensive motherboard replacement.

Moral of the story: Don’t let the “no power” diagnosis scare you. Sometimes, it’s just a single component standing between your laptop and a second chance. If you’ve got a Lenovo, MacBook, or any other laptop that’s misbehaving, bring it in—I love a good repair mystery.
